How We Got Started
With the Veganuary charity campaign at the forefront of our mind – aimed at encouraging individuals to give up meat and dairy during January – we felt it was the perfect time to champion the local restaurants and cafes that accommodate vegans well throughout the year. Newcastle already has a Restaurant Week running biannually, but we felt there was scope to highlight those who support a plant-based diet independently to this already established event.
The idea of Vegan Restaurant Week is to not only encourage the patronage of vegetarian and vegan establishments in the area, but to also support eateries you may not expect to offer meat and dairy-free dishes. You will find high street chains alongside family-run businesses who have pledged their support to our fledgling concept.
At a time of the year when people are resolving to follow a healthier diet, what better way to kick start the New Year than with a week of plant-based foods demonstrating how rich, varied and delicious the vegan way of life can be? There are a number a reasons to give Vegan Restaurant Week a try even if you aren’t vegan or vegetarian already; the positive impact it has on the environment and the lives of animals, the health benefits, or just to try something different. If you have no interest in veganism some of the special offers may tempt you to try out what’s available anyway!
To enjoy Vegan Restaurant Week all you have to do is visit any of the participating establishments and mention their offer. Over the next few weeks we will be adding what’s on offer at each restaurant, which they will also be promoting too.
